A REAPER MADE – CHAPTER 1

The old woman in the hospital bed took in a ragged sigh that sounded like a struggle. She looked around the room, to the bouquet of wildflowers that sat in a plastic jar at the foot of her bed. Then her watery blue eyes focused in on me, sitting in the chair next to her. I sat up, leaned in to take her wrinkled hand in my smooth one.
“Who are you?” she asked, her tone fearful.
“I think you already know the answer to that, Anna,” I said, keeping my voice low and smooth. No need to further frighten them before they passed on.
“An angel?”
I shook my head, a curtain of dark hair swaying with the motion. She swallowed hard.
“You’re Death.”
“Not quite. More like an escort.”
“A R-reaper.”
Many humans knew us by name, but it still surprised me when they came out and said it. I nodded, a slow movement to prevent her from panicking. Everyone feared dying. It was my job to help them transition.
Anna looked to the closed door and back to me. “You…can anyone else see you?”
“When I want them to, yes. Right now, however, it’s just you and me.”
The old woman blinked hard and when she opened them again, a single tear streaked down her cheek. I gave her hand a reassuring squeeze.
“Anna, it’s all right. You’re moving on.”
“To where?”
I shook my head. “I can’t answer that. No one can. You must discover it for yourself.”
Anna withdrew her trembling hand from mine, put it over her heart. “I don’t know if I’m ready.”
“I wouldn’t be here if you weren’t.”
“What about my family? My daughter, my grandchildren? Can I say goodbye?”
“You saw them this morning, don’t you remember?”
Confusion crossed her face. Anna had been struggling with dementia in addition to her illness, but I knew to be patient. It was in the job description. When she still didn’t speak, I prodded a little.
“Anna, it’s time.”
She gave me another scared look. “Will it hurt?”
“No,” I assured her. “All you need to do is close your eyes and relax.”
Anna appeared to consider her options, her grip tightening on the thin sheets. She sucked in a deep breath, wincing at the rattle in her lungs. Then she steeled herself, looked at me and nodded. “Okay. I’m ready.”
I gave her a warm smile and put my hands on hers. “Close your eyes.”
She did as instructed, the scared look on her face fading as she relaxed into the bed. I sent warmth from my hands to hers, waited for her soul to disengage from her physical body. After maybe ten seconds, I felt a shift in Anna. A sigh escaped her, the air leaving her withering lungs and decaying body. Keeping my hands on hers, I stood and waited.
Then Anna’s spirit came forward, her hand in mine as she lifted herself from the physical plane. Without problem, Anna stood tall next to me, looking younger than she had in years. Her body may have been old and weathered, but her soul, as like most others, appeared younger, vibrant. Most of the older souls, once out of the body that held them back, were happy to feel alive again. It was one of my favorite things about the job, to see the light shine in their eyes after years of aging and physical pain.
Anna gripped my hand, looked back to her body lying peacefully on the bed. She gave me a relieved look. “You were right, that didn’t hurt at all.”
“I’m glad,” I told her with a smile. “Do you want to say goodbye?”
“To that old thing?” she said, waving her hand at her wrinkled body. “I suppose I should, but now that I’m out, all I can think about is the next step.”
“Not unusual,” I said, the corners of my mouth turning upward. Now that Anna was free, the spunk she’d had in her youth returned. I motioned my head towards the door. “Come. Walk with me.”
She didn’t let go of my hand as we walked through the door and out into the hallway. No one so much as blinked at us as we wandered. At first, Anna tried to skirt around obstacles and people, before she realized she went right through them. Before we’d even reached the end of the hallway, she was practically skipping.
“I haven’t felt this good in years,” she said. “Do you think I’ll reunite with my husband?”
“I can’t answer that for certain, but he’ll know you’re coming. He’ll find you if he can.”
“He used to say he’d follow me anywhere. I’ve missed him so much.” She smiled at the memory, then paused as though realizing something. She turned to me. “What is your name?”
“Grace.”
“Grace,” she repeated. “Thank you.”
“It’s my pleasure. Would you like to continue walking or do you think you’re ready?”
Anxiety flashed across Anna’s face before she swallowed hard and nodded. “I think…I think I’m ready to go.”
I squeezed her hand. “May you find peace in your afterlife.”
A warm breeze swept through the hallway, though the living continued as though nothing were happening. The wind found us, circled around and played with my and Anna’s hair. I let go of her hand and took a step back as Anna looked around.
“Am I supposed to walk into the light?” she asked.
I couldn’t help but smile at the question; it seemed like everyone always asked. I shook my head. “There are no bright lights. It’s okay – take a deep breath and be patient.”
Souls didn’t need to breathe, but I always saw them do it before they moved on. It seemed to calm them down as it would’ve had they been in their human bodies. Old habits died hard, I supposed, but if that helped them feel better, I saw no need to point it out.
The breeze picked up, turned into an unseen tornado that swirled around Anna. Her hair went in every direction but her posture stayed still. As she closed her eyes, I saw a smile grow on her face. Then the wind took her, and Anna’s soul faded away in front of my eyes. Warmth grew in my chest, as it usually did with each peaceful passing, and I smiled briefly before turning back into the retirement home to find the next soul.

Review/ Exerpt Tour & Giveaway: ALL BROKE DOWN by Cora Carmack

Hey Everyone! I am thrilled to bring to you today my blog tour stop on the All Broke Down Review/ Exerpt tour! Today I give to you my review, and share with you my thoughts on the latest Cora Carmack book! Which I could not be more excited to share!

But first lets get to know a little bit about the book, just in case you are new to my blog and have no idea who Cora Carmack is, what All Broke Down ,and the Rusk University series is about!

************************************************************************

ALL BROKE DOWN:

In this second book in New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Cora Carmack’s New Adult, Texas-set Rusk University series, which began with All Lined Up, a young woman discovers that you can’t only fight for what you believe in . . . sometimes you have to fight for what you love

Dylan fights for lost causes. Probably because she used to be one.

Environmental issues, civil rights, corrupt corporations, and politicians—you name it, she’s probably been involved in a protest. When her latest cause lands her in jail overnight, she meets Silas Moore. He’s in for a different kind of fighting. And though he’s arrogant and infuriating, she can’t help being fascinated with him. Yet another lost cause.

Football and trouble are the only things that have ever come naturally to Silas. And it’s trouble that lands him in a cell next to do-gooder Dylan. He’s met girls like her before—fixers, he calls them, desperate to heal the damage and make him into their ideal boyfriend. But he doesn’t think he’s broken, and he definitely doesn’t need a girlfriend trying to change him. Until, that is, his anger issues and rash decisions threaten the only thing he really cares about, his spot on the Rusk University football team. Dylan might just be the perfect girl to help.

Because Silas Moore needs some fixing after all.

So now that we know about the book and before we hear my thoughts, lets learn about the author!

CORA CARMACK

About Cora Carmack:

Cora Carmack is a twenty-something writer who likes to write about twenty-something characters. She's done a multitude of things in her life-- boring jobs (like working retail), Fun jobs (like working in a theatre), stressful jobs (like teaching), and dream jobs (like writing). She enjoys placing her characters in the most awkward situations possible, and then trying to help them get a boyfriend out of it. Awkward people need love, too. Her first book, LOSING IT, was a New York Times and USA Today bestseller.

MY THOUGHTS

Where to start with the review!...haha. As you all know I'm part of Cora's street team and I could not be happier to share my thoughts with you!

The book starts out great!  You have Silas the bad boy, and Dylan the activist for all lost causes. They are pretty much thrown together.  And in the strangest of all places JAIL!

From the moment that these two meet you can just feel the chemistry. You know they are attracted to eachother because they a polar opposites.  Or at least they feel that they are. And maybe in some ways...yea they are.

However where it matters most is where they are the same. They both have the biggest hearts, and they are not afraid to fight for what they believe or the people they care for the most.

And in true Cora fashion,  she was able to create two characters and suck us into their world.  I loved the plot and storyline of this book.  It was original and believable.

The graphic below is one of my favorite quotes.

Speaking of quotes, this book is not lacking in amazing one liners. As well as awkward moments. Cora Carmack has a gift with being a master at creating both.

With all that being said. There is a part of the book, more towards the end. That I will not mention because I don't want to ruin any part of the book. I was quite shocked by this, Cora has definitely hit home with something that sad to say, a lot of college campuses deal with.  I know that she is going to do it justice.  I was just left feeling that I needed more closure or something with Silas & Dylan. I just needed/ wanted more!

Overall this was another amazing Cora Carmack novel! So I give this a good 4.5 out 5 stars!

Can not wait till the 3rd book in the series comes out sometime next year. So keep your  eyes peeled for All Played out, and get your hands on a copy of All Broke Down TODAY!!!

Thank you so much to Cora Carmack for allowing me to be apart of her amazing Street Team, and this blog tour. As well as to Inkslinger!

And most important of all Thank You readers! For always stopping by each week. Making this all possible!

    Excerpt:

I think I get it then. That decision I saw in her eyes back in the kitchen. That’s what this, what I’m about for her, too. I’m just another part of whatever rebellion she started earlier today. About doing what she wants, not what’s expected of her.
“We’re not talking about me, though,” she says. “So you went to meet your friend, and then what happened?”
She keeps her eyes down as she picks up the gauze and begins winding it snugly around the knuckles of one hand, and then the other.
“He said the wrong thing.”
“Which was?”
“Dylan.” Now it’s her that’s pushing too hard. I didn’t want to talk about things with my friends, and I won’t talk about them with her, either, no matter how gorgeous she is.
“I’ll guess. You were mad about what he did, and he wasn’t sorry.”
“This isn’t middle school, Pickle. He didn’t hurt my feelings. He said some shit he had no business saying, and it pissed me off. The end.”
“But you don’t think some of that anger stems from what you feel is a betrayal of your friendship?”
She finishes taping down the last of the gauze, but doesn’t let go of my hand.
“I think you’re analyzing me again. Making things more complicated than they are.”
“And I think you’re just a guy who doesn’t like to admit he has feelings.” She drags out the word, teasing me with some goofy smile on her face. I turn my hand over so I can clutch her wrist. I curlmy other bandaged hand around her waist and pull her closer.
“I feel plenty of things.”
The teasing stops. She swallows.
“I wasn’t talking about that kind of feeling.”
With her standing and me sitting, I’m eye level with her chest. I see the sharp rise and fall as she sucks in a breath. I want her in my lap again, straddling me this time.
“Doesn’t mean we can’t talk about that kind of feeling. Or experiment with it.”
“Is that Stella girl an ex?”
I cough, surprised. My throat twists uncomfortably, and it takes me a couple of solid breaths to get a hold on myself.
“Ah, no. Stella and I have never dated.”
“Have you—”
“Do you ever run out of questions?”
“Not ever.” She turns playful again, and I’m done doing this the careful way. If she wants a rebellion, I’ll be the one to give it to her. I want her against me, and I’m tired of waiting.
I pull her forward, insinuating my knees between hers, and her body naturally follows, settling across my thighs. Her lips part, but she catches herself before she gasps this time. I keep her steady with my hands at her waist and say, “I’ll make you a deal. A question for a kiss.”
Tentatively, she lays her palms against my shoulders. They rest there, her grip light and casual. She ponders my offer for a moment, and it drives me mad that she can do that while our hips are inches away from alignment.
“Okay then. Are you—”
I cut her off. “Not so fast, Dylan Brenner. I’ve already answered one question. We’ve got to settle up first.”
I wrap her braid around my hand like I’ve been waiting to do all night, and I use it to pull her head back just enough that I can crush my mouth against hers.

Football Friday & Giveaway: Meet Silas Moore of All Broke Down

Hey guys! Another week has gone by and we are yet again at another Friday!  So this week, what wonderful character are you fantastic blogger going to be introduced to this week from All Broke Down? !

Can I get a drum roll please......

ITS.....

YOU GUESS IT!!!!!

NONE OTHER THAN.....

The main main himself, number 22 Silas Moore! What can I say about Silas.  Other than being the resident bad boy of the Rusk University.  He likes to give off this rough and tough exterior. Which I guess is warranted because he has not had the best upbringing.

But once you get to know him he truly does have a heart of gold. He thinks of himself as a lost cause,  someone not worthy of a better life.

That is until he meets Dylan Brenner. The resident all around good girl,  activist,  and fighter for all lost causes. Who you were introduced to last week.  :)

He feels that just by being around her, she makes him better. But in reality they both balance each other out perfect. She kind of reigning in his personality and grounding him. While he kind of helps her break loose a little and not be so afraid of what her parents or the world might think.  To live a little.

One of the things I live most about Silas is that he is fiercely loyal. Despite his insecurities , and his own baggage. He will do whatever he can to help you. Once he is on your side, you have him for life.

Also his heart,  he thinks that he needs Dylan to make him better. But really what makes him good is already inside of him.  It's just something he has to realize on his own. That he doesn't have to follow in his families footsteps.

That he is free to be who he wants and that he is worth all that he achieves in life. That no one can take his hard work away from him.

It takes him a while to figure that all out, but I promise if you pick up this book and stick around for the ride you won't be sorry!

And if your not sure exactly what ALL BROKE DOWN is all about because you are a new comer, have no fear!

Southern Born Books Christmas Tour - Review & Giveaway

Hey readers! I am bringing you something new this week! I am participating in the Southern Born Books Christmas tour and I going to be bringing you 4 reviews in 1 post. So I hope that you enjoy it, but I promise that there will be giveaways. Just stick with me and you will not be sorry.

The first book I bring you is called...

Holiday At Magnolia Bay

After a mission goes terribly wrong, ending in the death of a teammate, Navy Seal, Drew Lanham, is forced to take a leave from active-duty. Retreating to his godmother’s beach house in coastal Magnolia Bay, Drew plans to spend the three weeks R&R licking his wounds and catching some rays while the nightmares from his failed op fade. The last thing he wants to do is mingle with the locals. What he doesn’t count on is an early morning encounter with a goddess rising from the sea. His interest is piqued and his body put on alert when he finds out that same woman may or may not be after his godmother’s money.

Marine biologist, Jenna Huntley, has been searching her whole life for a place to call home and Magnolia Bay is that place. Unfortunately, she’s underutilizing her education giving tours at the town’s turtle rescue center. With the help of an octogenarian patroness, she maps out a proposal to develop a turtle hatchery on-site. Everything is going as planned until the older woman’s godson arrives. Suddenly, nothing is as it seems and Jenna’s future is hanging in the balance, with a sexy warrior pulling all the strings. Her natural tendency is to help the damaged hero, but she’s sworn off letting military men in her life ever again.

Will Drew and Jenna be able to put their pasts behind them and learn to trust their hearts long enough to enjoy their Holiday at Magnolia Bay?

Tracy Solheim is the international bestselling author of the Out of Bound Series for Penguin.  Her books feature members of the fictitious Baltimore Blaze football team and the women who love them.  In a previous life, Tracy wrote best sellers for Congress and was a freelance journalist for regional and national magazines. She’s a military brat who now makes her home in Johns Creek, Georgia, with her husband, their two children, a pesky Labrador retriever puppy and a horse named after her first novel. My Thoughts

Ohh Where to begin with the story of Drew and Jenna?! As you know I's a spoiler free reviewer, and with this being such a shot story it took me a while to get my thoughts just right!

When we first meet Drew Lanham, he is on leave from the Navy and is carrying some post war baggage. He finds himself at his Godmother's beach house on Magnolia Bay. Hoping to get himself back together, so he can return to active duty.

Then he meets Jenna Huntley, a passionate sea turtle activist who just happens to be old friends with his godmother, Aunt Evie! Drew told himself the minute he got to his Aunt Evie's house that all the women were going to be off limits. Him and Jenna find themselves in a quite the predicament when their "friendship" becomes a little more involved.

I really enjoyed this story. And I find myself quite surprised. Only because when it comes to novella's I usually find myself wanting more and dissatisfied by the ending. However, the character's were wonderfully written. The story did not seem rushed at all, there was a natural progression.  Also the way the author was able to add in the PTSD, something that most military men who have been in combat suffer from. Shedding light on such a real life issue was wonderful. There were no unanswered questions by the ending of the book. Tracy did a fantastic job! I give this book at 4 out 5!

Just In Time For Christmas

Nobody does Christmas like Miranda Hamilton, and now that she finally has her chance to chair Magnolia Bay's tree lighting and the cotillion, which benefits her late mother’s breast cancer foundation, this Christmas is shaping up to be the best ever. That is until her childhood nemesis Logan Mauldin buys his way on her committee and starts making plans of his own.

Logan Mauldin loves to get under Miranda's very sexy skin, and it's only fair. She's been getting under his since long before their first kiss at 13. Logan’s the last man interested in co-chairing a Christmas committee or participating in a sexy bachelor auction, but since that night he interrupted Miranda on a date and cornered her under the mistletoe, he can't stop thinking about her. Or vying for her attention and bugging the hell out of her.

Christmas cheer isn’t the only thing that heats up between the Miranda and Logan, but, thanks to a lie that is as much her fault as it is his, he loses the woman he’s loved since forever. Logan will need a Christmas miracle for Miranda to forgive him. A grand gesture to melt her heart and win her back just in time for Christmas.

Kim Boykin is a women's fiction author with a sassy Southern streak. She is the author of The Wisdom of Hair, Steal Me, Cowboy, and Palmetto Moon (Summer 2014.) While her heart is always in South Carolina, she lives in Charlotte, North Carolina, with her husband, 3 dogs, and 126 rose bushes. See what she's up to at www.kimboykin.com/

My Thoughts

When you first meet Miranda she comes off as this wonderful, genuine, and caring human being. With a touch of OCD, needing to be in control of everything she does. From the best that breakfast is made her B & B, to the holiday cotillion committee.
Then of course who comes into the picture but non other than Logan Mauldin. Pretty much throwing her world upside down. The boy from her childhood,  who broke her heart.  Now, back into her life.  Making her feel completely out of control, by becoming Co Chair of the Holiday Cotillion Committee and of course stirring up all kinds of old feelings.

But with the Cotillion coming up quickly and this being the biggest fundraiser of the year, Miranda will not let anything stand in the way of this Cotillion running smoothly. Her want and need to do her late mother's foundation justice and her love of all things Christmas is too strong, ad means too much to her.  And Logan knows that night years ago, he made a huge mistake and he is back and wants to make everything right.

This story was fun, sweet, and a fast read. I liked the story line, and the characters were very relateable. I too share a love of all things Christmas, so I found myself wanting to me Miranda Hamilton. Owning my own B & B, living in a small ocean side town like Magnolia Bay. I give this book a 4 out 5.
